Your rights under Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004

Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council establishes common rules on compensation and assistance to air passengers in the event of denied boarding, flight cancellation, or long delay.

The Regulation aims to ensure a high level of passenger protection within the European Union and applies, under specific conditions, to passengers departing from an airport located in an EU Member State, as well as to passengers departing from a third country to an EU Member State when the flight is operated by an EU air carrier.

Under this Regulation, passengers may be entitled to assistance, care, reimbursement, re-routing, and/or financial compensation, depending on the circumstances of the disruption and the applicable legal conditions.

Passenger rights may include, among others:

  • Compensation in cases of denied boarding, cancellation, or long delay
  • Reimbursement of the ticket or re-routing to the final destination
  • Meals and refreshments during waiting time
  • Hotel accommodation when an overnight stay becomes necessary
  • Transport between the airport and the place of accommodation
  • Special care for passengers with reduced mobility and unaccompanied children
  • Clear written information regarding passenger rights

Compensation amounts may vary depending on the flight distance and the specific circumstances of each case, as provided under Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004.

For full legal details, passengers are advised to consult the official text of Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004 and/or contact the operating air carrier or the competent national enforcement body.
